Trebincea

The Silver Chair

Terebinthia is an island destination in the east, significant as the possible site of Caspian X’s hoped-for final meeting with Aslan. A rumour that Aslan has been seen there shapes the Narnians’ uncertainty about where the aging King will sail, while his absence leaves Jill Pole and Eustace Scrubb without the assistance he might have arranged for their search for Prince Rilian.

Setting and Rumour

Terebinthia enters the account through Glimfeather’s report that Aslan may have been seen in the islands, “in Terebinthia, I think it was.” The owl’s uncertainty matters: the island is presented not as a confirmed destination or a place the children visit, but as the first possible stop in a voyage whose course nobody can confidently predict.

Caspian’s Intended Voyage

Caspian has said that before he dies he will make one more attempt to see Aslan face to face and ask his advice about who should succeed him as King. If he does not meet Aslan in Terebinthia, Glimfeather fears he may continue east to the Seven Isles and Lone Islands, and farther still. The possibility of Terebinthia therefore stands at the start of a journey that might not end there: the King’s remembered voyage to the world’s end still exerts a pull, though he does not speak of it openly.

Significance to the Search

Because Caspian’s return is uncertain, Jill asks whether there is any point in waiting for him. Glimfeather says there is not, lamenting that if the children had spoken to the King at once, he would have arranged everything and probably given them an army to search for Prince Rilian. Terebinthia thus belongs to the story as a distant possibility rather than a visited setting: the rumoured sighting of Aslan helps explain Caspian’s departure, while the departure closes off immediate royal aid for the children’s quest.
